Biography

Nicola Senesi is Professor Emeritus of the University of Bari “Aldo Moro”, where he was Full Professor of Soil Chemistry from 1986 to 2013, and developed all his academic career since 1969. He was Head of the Department of Agroforestal and Environmental Biology and Chemistry (2006-2011), Chairman of PhD Programme Committee in Agricultural Chemistry (1991-2002) and Director of the Institute of Agricultural Chemistry (1992-1999). Visiting Professor and Scholar in several world Universities and Research Institutes. Doctor Honoris Causa of the Institute National Polytechnique of Toulouse, France, Fellow of the American Soc. of Agronomy and Soil Science Soc. of America, Honorary Member of the Internat. Humic Substances Soc., Internat. Union of Soil Science and others, President of the European Confederation of Soil Science Societies and other International and National scientific Societies. Author of about 400 scientific and tecnical papers and 50 invited book chapters and reviews, and co-editor of 20 books and conference proceedings.

Research Interest

Fundamental and applied aspects of chemistry and biochemistry of organic matter from soils and other systems and materials by use of advanced physico-chemical techniques and biochemical tools; interactions of humic substances with organic and inorganic chemicals, including pesticides, endocrine disruptors and trace metals; the physiological and antimutagenic effects of humic substances on plants; the implications of recycling organic wastes on soil fertility and crop production; the application of fractal geometry to molecular conformation and aggregation processes of humic substances; and humic substances as natural nanomaterials
